Thematic focus and projects in the Lab Non-Textual Materials

The Lab Non-Textual Materials (NTM) was founded in 2012 out of the need to improve the usability and accessibility of non-textual materials such as research data, videos, graphics and Open Educational Resources (OER). The Lab's central motivation is to optimize the discovery, search and citation of these materials by developing innovative infrastructures, tools and services. Lab NTM's services include the TIB AV-Portal, the transnational OER portal for university teaching twillo, the conference service ConRec and the TIB Terminology Service. The Research Data Services (RDS) Lab is part of the Lab NTM and deals in particular with infrastructure projects in the context of research data. In the labs, target group-specific training courses are held, particularly in the areas of research data management, video and OER production. The NTM and RDS labs work closely with the Visual Analytics and Scientific Data Management research groups, Learning and Skill Analytics, the Open Science Lab and the Development department . The activities are constantly being expanded through the acquisition of third-party funding.

Objectives of the NTM and RDS labs:

  • Innovative developments: Further development and operation of infrastructures and tools that improve the retrieval, searching and citation of research data, videos, graphics and open educational resources
  • User-centered and agile software design: ensuring the optimal usability of the developed infrastructures, portals and tools
  • Knowledge transfer / technology transfer: Ensuring the rapid and successful transfer of research approaches into practice
  • Education and training: expanding the range of training courses to support researchers, teachers and students in dealing with non-textual materials and research data management, for example on the topic of AI-supported video production
  • Sustainable funding: Continuous further development through active acquisition of third-party funding and close cooperation
  • Raising awareness: Increasing the visibility and attractiveness of the services through targeted public relations work and community building
  • Promoting the idea of open science: supporting the scientific community through open and accessible educational resources, services and infrastructures

Services of the Lab NTM

TIB AV-Portal

The TIB AV-Portal (since 2014) celebrates its tenth anniversary on April 29, 2024 and has developed into a central platform for scientific videos in the German scientific community. It offers services such as hosting, citation through DOI and Media Fragment Identifier as well as long-term archiving of over 46,000 videos (as of June 2024). Language, text and image recognition processes enable precise searchability, and newly uploaded videos are transcribed and subtitled with AI support to facilitate multilingual understanding and searching. The portal provides CC0-licensed metadata and is continuously developed by a scrum team.

twilloHub - Portal for Open Educational Resources / OERSI

The twilloHub / OERSI (since 2019) is a service that enables other federal states to host and publish OER on the twillo portal in Lower Saxony. The platform developed by TIB supports educational institutions and teachers in centrally collecting, sharing and disseminating OER materials, whose metadata is included in the cross-state search index OERSI. The TIB AV-Portal is the central video repository for OER videos. Through twilloHub, the federal states benefit from a shared infrastructure that facilitates the access and availability of OER and promotes an open, collaborative education system.

ConRec - Conference Recording Service and more

TIB ConRec offers comprehensive services in the field of video production for scientific events. This includes the professional recording and editing of lectures and workshops, the streaming and management of virtual and hybrid conferences and the creation of various AV media such as explanatory videos and video podcasts. The aim is to make scientific content accessible to a wider public via platforms such as the TIB AV portal. In addition, ConRec supports scientists in effective video production through individual consultations and workshops, thus contributing to science communication.
