Current Issue Highlights

The study highlights the critical role of S1PR2 (sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor 2)-mediated mitochondrial fragmentation in monocyte-macrophages during sepsis-induced immunosuppression. The development of novel therapeutics targeting S1PR2-Drp1 signaling may provide new avenues for the treatment of immunosuppression and improvement of the prognosis in patients with sepsis.

The research demonstrates that chromobox protein homolog 5 is a key epigenetic regulator driving metabolic dysfunction and fibroblast activation in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Targeting the chromobox protein homolog 5 pathway offers a potential therapeutic strategy to enhance metabolic responses and improve the efficacy of treatments such as Metformin, ultimately inhibiting lung fibrosis progression. This work advances our understanding of the epigenetic and metabolic mechanisms underlying IPF.

This work demonstrates the protective effects of increased circulating EC-SOD (extracellular superoxide dismutase) on platelet– neutrophil interactions in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury. Redox-based modification of platelet activation pathways may offer multiple potential therapeutic targets. This study offers an important insight into redox regulation of platelet functionality and highlights the need for in-depth understanding of the specific redox-based mechanism(s).

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is an unmet medical condition that causes significant morbidity and mortality in patients, mostly because of lung defects. Repair of the diaphragm in utero remains the only available treatment strategy so far. This study employed patient samples and animal models of CDH to investigate molecular pathways that can be normalized by the fetal surgical procedure in CDH.
