Enrollment in Blue Cross Blue Shield plans declined slightly between 2022 and 2024, according to a June 10 report by Mark Farrah Associates, a healthcare industry data aggregator.
The report examined differences between BCBS and non-BCBS plan growth between 2020 and 2024.
Here are five things to know:
- Total BCBS enrollment increased from 51.7 million in 2020 to 56.7 million in 2022. Enrollment declined to 55.2 million in 2024. Enrollment in non-BCBS plans also declined between 2022 and 2024, from 135.4 million to 131.4 million.
- Non-BCBS plans outpaced BCBS companies in growth in the individual market from 2020 to 2024. Enrollment in individual plans provided by BCBS companies grew 36.6%, while non-BCBS enrollment increased by 106.1%.
- Fully insured group enrollment declined for BCBS and non-BCBS companies. BCBS companies saw smaller losses in this market, with membership declining by 4.6% from 2020 to 2024. Among non-BCBS companies, enrollment declined by 13.6%.
- BCBS plans slightly outpaced non-BCBS companies in Medicare Advantage growth. BCBS plans added 1.3 million MA members from 2020 to 2024, a 32.8% increase. Enrollment in non-BCBS plans increased by 32.3%.
- BCBS plans grew Medicaid enrollment, while enrollment declined in non-BCBS plans. Enrollment in BCBS Medicaid plans increased by 6.7% from 2020 to 2024, while enrollment in non-BCBS Medicaid plans declined by 4%.
