Configure Jira components

This page is for company-managed projects

To check whether your project is team-managed or company-managed, select More actions (•••) next to the project name in either the header or the sidebar. At the bottom of the menu that opens, your project details will be shown.

More about the difference between company-managed and team-managed projects.

You must have the following to do the things described on this page.

Role: Project admin, App admin

  1. If not already in your project navigation, select add to navigation (), then Components.

  2. Select Add to navigation.

Or,

  1. Next to your project’s name in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Project settings.

  2. Select Components.

Create a Jira component

  1. Select Create component.

    • Check that the project is using Jira components, not Compass components. If it’s switched to Compass components, your project admin will need to switch to Jira components.

  2. Give the component a meaningful name.

  3. It's a good idea to give a description to the component. Component descriptions appear as a tooltip when a user hovers their mouse over a component label.

  4. Set a component lead, if you like. This is usually the team lead responsible for overseeing work associated with the component.

  5. If you like, set a default assignee for work items created with the component.

  6. Select Save.

When you add components to your project, a new Component field appears on your project's work items. Read about linking work items to components.

Select a default assignee

A component default assignee will override the project's overall default assignee. If someone creates a work item with more than one component, and the default assignees for those components are different people, then Jira assigns the work item to the default assignee of the component that is first alphabetically.

You can nominate an individual person by searching for their name.

If your project's team changes frequently, you can set the default assignee to a particular role. This can future-proof the default assignee of a component, in the case that someone leaves your project.

Here's the available options:

  • Project default — Assign the work item to the same person as the project's default assignee.

  • Project lead — Assign the work item to project's lead.

  • Component lead — Assign the work item to the component's lead.

  • Unassigned - If your site allows unassigned work items, the work item will remain unassigned.

Edit or delete a component

  1. In your project navigation, select Components.

  2. In the component's entry on the table, select the More actions (•••).

  3. Select Edit or Delete.

  4. If there are any work items linked to the component, you can link them to another component, or unlink them entirely.
