Create or remove dependencies on your timeline
You must have the following to do the things described on this page.
Permission: Link work items
Dependencies, also called Work item links in other parts of Jira, allow you to show the order in which work items need to be done. If there’s a dependency between two work items, one must be finished before the next can begin.
In order to use this feature, a Jira admin needs to enable work item linking. The timeline can only show work items with the Blocks work item link type and link work items from a single project. How to enable work item linking
Create a dependency
To create a dependency directly on your timeline:
Hover over the work item’s schedule bar to reveal dots on either side, as shown above.
Drag one of the dots to the work item you want to link. The timeline automatically configures the order of the dependency (blocks or is blocked by) based on the order in which work items are scheduled.
To create a dependency from the side work item view panel:
Highlight a work item on the timeline to open the side info panel.
Select the icon to open the link menu, then choose Link work item.
Select either blocks or is blocked by, then select the work item to link.
View dependency details
To view dependency details, select the line between dependent items.
Remove a dependency
To remove a dependency between two work items:
Select the line linking the work items you want to separate to open the the dependency view window.
Select the icon to remove the dependency.
