Why can’t I edit a field?

As admin, you have the power to create new fields and configure them as you like. However, fields created by Jira or third-party apps can’t be edited because they require a specific configuration.

Fields that can’t be edited show:

  • the word LOCKED next to the field name

  • a message telling you the field can’t be edited in the More actions () menu

  • the option to View field information where you’d normally see an option to edit it

You can use these fields on your work items and screens like any other field; you just can’t change their configuration. If you need to change one of these fields, make a new field that you can edit.

The following fields created by Jira can’t be edited. There may be more if you’ve added other apps to your site.

  • Project

  • Issue Type

  • Summary

  • Due Date

  • Priority

  • Resolution

  • Security

  • Labels

  • Issue Links

  • Components

  • Fix Versions

  • Affect Versions

  • Issue Restriction

  • Assignee

  • Reporter

  • Attachment

  • Worklog

  • Time Tracking

  • Description

  • Environment
