Jira work items are displayed on your Jira board, in your backlog, and on your project timeline However, your board, backlog, sprint section, and timeline can each only show up to 5,000 work items at a time.

Work item limits on the board and backlog

If your board or backlog has exceeded the work item limit, it will only display the first 5,000 work items. We’ll show you a warning message to let you know when your board or backlog is approaching the 5,000 work item limit, and again if the number of work items goes over the limit.

To reduce the number of work items on your board:

• Move work items to your backlog (if the backlog is enabled)

• Move work items to a new sprint (if your team uses sprints)

• Move work items to a new project

• In Kanban projects, clear “done” work items from your board

To reduce the number of work items in your backlog:

• Move work items to a sprint

• Move work items to a new project

Work item limits in the sprint section

If you’re using sprints to organize work in your backlog, the total number of work items across all your sprints must be less than 5,000 for Jira to display them all. If there are more than 5,000 work items across your sprints (or in a single sprint, if you’ve only created one sprint) only the first 5,000 work items will display. We’ll show you a warning message to let you know when your sprint section is approaching the 5,000 work item limit, and again if the number of work items goes over the limit. Work items that belong to completed sprints are not included in the 5,000 limit.

To reduce the number of work items in the sprint section:

• Move work items to your backlog

• Move work items to a new project
